Valentines day is a day marked out to celebrate love. But what is love and what is the greatest love story of all time?
One of the greatest deficiencies about the current generation is our gross misunderstanding of love. I believe that love is possibly the most overused and abused word in the dictionary today. A perfect illustration of our misconception of love is that when you type “love” into Google’s search engine, the majority of the results relate to flirting, romance and sex. Love has been reduced to these three activities. But the truth is that it is far greater than those three.
A possible reason for our misunderstanding may stem from the fact that most people do not know where love comes from. Knowing the history of a thing helps you to understand it better. The bible clearly states that love comes from God,
Dear friends, we should love each other, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has become God’s child. And so everyone who loves knows God. (1John 4:7)
Elsewhere love is used synonymously with God. The bible states that,
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.(1John 4:8)
This means you can’t separate love and God. Whoever does not know God cannot truly love because He is love and it’s only when love (God) comes to indwell you that you can begin to truly love.
God loves the world so much despite our shortcomings that He sacrificed Jesus, His dear son to die for our sins, so that when we put our faith in what Jesus has done we’ll be saved. This is the greatest love of all time. Jesus said the highest demonstration of love is to put your life down for your friends.
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.(John 15:13)
How many of us will give away their beloved children to save evil people? I certainly couldn’t! A good man I’ll consider and still say no, talk less a wicked person. But Jesus is the love of God manifested in the flesh. Accept God’s love today. His love is greater than anything partners, parents, siblings and friends could ever offer us. The love of Christ is much more intimate than sex. It is agape love- unconditional love. It knows no boundaries. It’s able to forgive EVERY sin and keep no records of wrongs. The Message bible puts it this way,
Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
It is pure love from the very heart of God. This love turns lives from grass to grace and from futility to fruitfulness. You don’t work to gain this unconditional love. You just receive it by faith through Jesus Christ. Accept Jesus into your heart today and begin to experience God’s unconditional and life transforming love- that is true love!
